Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is one of the most innovative and advanced therapies in the field of regenerative medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery.
PRF is a biological product derived from the patient’s own blood by means of a centrifugation procedure to obtain a highly concentrated solution of platelets and growth factors. Fibrinogen and platelet growth factors are fundamental components of PRF and key elements in stimulating tissue regeneration and accelerating healing time after surgery. It is an autologous platelet and fibrin concentrate, which is produced by centrifuging the patient’s own blood. This product is used in various areas of medicine, including maxillofacial surgery, implantology, periodontology and orthopaedics.
It represents a viable alternative to conventional therapies, such as the use of synthetic materials or chemicals. Thanks to its biological composition, PRF improves the healing response and reduces the risk of post-operative infections. Furthermore, being an autologous product, i.e. derived from the patient’s own blood, PRF ensures greater compatibility and better integration with tissues, reducing the risk of post-operative complications.
But the benefits do not stop there. Thanks to its high concentration of platelets and growth factors, PRF is an excellent haemostatic, stimulating tissue healing quickly and effectively, and reducing post-operative recovery time.
It is also used in periodontal surgery, where it is applied locally to promote soft tissue healing and bone regeneration. The fibrin and growth factors present in PRF have been shown to stimulate periodontal cell proliferation, thereby enhancing soft tissue healing and bone formation.
However, not all centres can produce PRF: we are one of the very few dental facilities to have accreditation with the Lombardy Region, which has enabled us to activate an agreement with the regional Immunohaematology and Transfusion Medicine Service to produce this blood product in total safety.
