Dental care during PREGNANCY
During pregnancy, significant changes in female sex hormone levels occur that can lead to oral problems such as gingivitis and periodontitis. These conditions, if left untreated, not only affect the health of the mother, but can also have serious repercussions on the baby, increasing the risk of pre-term delivery and the birth of underweight babies.
Hormonal Impacts and Gingivitis
Hormonal Variations and Oral Health
Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, such as increases in oestrogen and progesterone, make the gums more sensitive and susceptible to inflammation, often exacerbating gingivitis conditions. The prevalence of this condition can be as high as 100 per cent among pregnant women. If not properly managed, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, a more serious disease that can damage the connective tissue and bone supporting the teeth, worsening serious conditions such as gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. It is vital to recognise and treat these symptoms early to maintain a healthy pregnancy.
Dental Erosion and Prevention
Protecting Teeth During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, it is common to suffer from reflux, nausea and vomiting, conditions that expose teeth to acidic gastric juices and can cause enamel erosion. To protect teeth, it is essential to use mineral-rich products that help replenish lost minerals and neutralise acidity in the mouth, thus preserving dental health. We also recommend avoiding (especially frequent!) acidic or sugary snacks that can aggravate tooth erosion, and consulting your dentist regularly for evaluation and preventive treatment.
Risk of Caries
Consequences of untreated caries
The risk of developing caries and other gum tissue neoformations increases significantly during pregnancy. It is essential to treat caries to reduce the risk of transmission of cariogenic bacteria to the baby, maintaining optimal oral health for both. Educating pregnant women on the importance of oral hygiene and providing adequate tools for daily care can significantly reduce the incidence of caries.
Ministry of Health Recommendations
Healthy Pregnancy Guidelines
Following the Ministry of Health guidelines for oral health during pregnancy is crucial to prevent complications. Recommendations include regular dental visits and proper treatment, such as professional dental cleanings, which are essential to maintain a healthy mouth and minimise the risk of transmitting oral infections to the baby. It is also important for pregnant women to be informed about how their oral health can directly influence the health of their future baby, thus encouraging greater adherence to regular check-ups.
