GNATOLOGY
Gnathology is a branch of dentistry that studies the physiology, pathologies and functions affecting the jaw, studying the relationships between the jaw bones, teeth, joints and muscles that move the jaws (including the tongue). In other words, gnathology studies all disorders that can impair the functions of the mouth, causing facial pain, neck pain, headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears. In these cases there is close collaboration between the gnathology expert and other professionals, such as the posturologist, orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeon.
Disorders of the masticatory apparatus, in fact, can affect the patient's quality of life due to the pain generated by certain movements, to the point of being unable to open the mouth fully or even to the point of causing back problems. Gnathology deals with counteracting these problems, either by means of removable appliances made of resin, to be used only at night (dental splints), or by means of fixed systems (stabilising splints): dental splints serve to defat the overloaded muscular-articular structure, while stabilising splints allow the jaw to be repositioned in the correct position, immediately relieving joint pain.
